Does it all sound a bit too ‘Woo” for you?
Ok I’ll be honest before I truly understood what Hypnobirthing actually was, I too thought it all sounded a bit too good to be true, a bit too unbelievable and maybe just for those who were into the ‘Woo’!
That was of course before I birthed my 10lb 7oz son comfortably at home in water surrounded by a shop full of twinkly lights, breathing in lavender and clary sage and surrounded by birth affirmations in 3 1/2hrs and yep I breathed through my surges whilst imagining my vagina blooming open and bloom open it did!
Repeating my visualisation ‘she believed she could so she did’ whilst my body transitioned and prepared to release our boy.
At that moment, the moment he released from my body into the warm waters surrounding us both, I knew, I knew what all of the hundreds of women I had taught hypnobirthing too already knew …. that Hypnobirthing makes a difference, it doesn’t promise anything, it certainly doesn’t promise a pain free or a ‘perfect’ birth (though many Hypno Mama’s describe their birth as this, me included), but what it does do is educate you about birth, about your bodies epic inate ability to release the baby that your body has spent 9 months growing!
It teaches you how to relax deeply and quickly, it helps you to let go of the fear, it gives you tools and techniques to relax your body and mind and it gives your birth partner the power, knowledge and skills to support you.
When a woman’s birthing body was designed there was no knowledge that intervention’s existed, no forceps, epidurals, pethidine or even midwives. Whoever and whatever created and designed a woman’s body had to give it the perfect system to birth that baby, otherwise why conceive and grow a human if the woman’s body has either no clue or is pretty crap at releasing the human when the time is right!
Yes some women will experience things out of their control, when absolutely, we are so thankful for intervention, but mostly a woman with the right support and birthing environment will birth her baby. I’m not saying its easy, giving birth to both of my son’s was the hardest physical ‘work’ my body had ever done and most definitely the hardest my mind had ever worked at, relaxing and releasing the fear that had been instilled in me since childhood.
But I am so thankful for the ability my body and mind had to birth both of my son’s in a calm, comfortable and enjoyable way, YES I enjoyed giving birth! Pregnancy I’m not great at but birth, I rocked it!
